The Full Story

Vesper

We had already cared for four sheep, from our friend Jan, for a while. Jan taught us the first principles of how to keep sheep. With another friend, Koos, we had mentioned enthusiastically that when he needed help with his bottle lambs he could count on us. After all, we both worked at home because of the pandemi.

On the evening of April 5, 2021, Koos called us. He had a very weak lamb for us. He mentioned that he was very doubtful that she would make it. In good spirits we picked her up. With all the instructions we needed, fresh colostrum, a bottle and enough food for two days, we started the adventure. That night we got out of bed every two hours to feed her. Each time we were glad she was still there.
The next day we were able to pick up another rejected lamb. James (the first). He did well and seemed strong next to Vesper. His second day with us also went well while Vesper had a bad day that day. We were extremely hopeful that they would both make it so they could grow up together. However, we had great concerns for Vesper. To our horror, James died during that night. Vesper survived.

Then Vesper was alone again. But she recovered and became stronger and stronger. Lena (our dog) had also signed up as a foster mom from day one so there was attention and love enough in the house.

To keep the house clean, Vesper was given a diaper. To make sure she didn't lose it she was also given a romper to wear. Very useful but above all very cute!

The rest of her story, and photos, will follow soon.
